Gabe would try it.

He had nothing to lose, well, apart from the bit of closeness he did have with Dad.

Chapter 21

“Sanjay, I’m worried about my Mom.” Danielle knew it was not the best moment to talk about what had been eating away at her since Friday night, but she would make up for it later. Unlike Gabe she was not used to carrying this guilt or keeping everything bottled up inside her.

Kissing Sanjay on his full lips, she sat up in his bed and covered her nakedness. “She’s been acting so strange and quiet.”

“She seems happy enough.”

“It’s an act. She works, she cooks, she’s there for Gabe and me, but when I’ve come in late, I’ve heard her crying. It’s because of me and my big mouth that she’s miserable.” She wanted to cry. “I think she’s always loved Devraj.”

“But she said it’s over.” Sanjay propped up his pillow against the headboard. She got distracted for a moment by his muscular shoulders and arms, her fingers itching to caress his smooth pecs.

She shook her head and said, “She’s in denial. Mom’s really enjoying her new art career and her freedom means even more than I’d realized. But I think she’s also terrified about love and everything. I can’t imagine how she could have given Devraj up all those years ago, and now she gave him up because of Gabe and me. I’d never be able to survive losing you for anything.”

“I know, gorgeous.” He smiled, caressing her exposed upper arm.

“After Jim spoke to him, Uncle Dev doesn’t talk about the breakup either,” he frowned. “But he’s walking around like a crossed thunder god. Mom and Aunt Surita are giving him the silent treatment and the only person he’s civil with is Gabe.”

“And of course, his favorite nephew.”

“But of course.” Sanjay’s fingers crept under her sheet.

“Stop it, Sanjay.” She laughed, as he pulled her towards him.

“Don’t fight your future husband, woman. Remember I’m your god.” He nuzzled his mouth into her throat eliciting more gurgles of laughter from her. “I’m glad to see this empathetic side to my near-fiancée. I do believe you’re growing up.”

Was it his words or his fingers that spread warmth in the pit of her stomach?

She loved him so much!

“But, how do you expect me to concentrate on anything while you sit as proud as a naked goddess, giving me that adorable look? Kiss me.”

“I’m serious. I’ve screwed this up and I have to come up with a way to get them back together.”

As he crossed his arms against that bare bronze chest she adored so much, she wondered if he was sulking.

Then he gave her that cheeky dimpled grin. “I’ve got an idea.”
